North Carolina vs Clemson on Tuesday Jan. 30 is our game of the week. These two teams are solidly in the bracket at this time and are in the top 20 overall seed range. This game was very important for seeding purposes.
Using the new Tier RPI ranking system, this game was a Tier 1 game for both teams, making this game very significant to the resumes of both teams. Clemson defeated North Carolina 82-78 and improved its' record to 18-4. Clemson gained its' fifth tier 1 win and also the earned the best quality win on their schedule to date. Most importantly was the fact that the victory came after losing top scorer Donte Grantham. The committee will be evaluating Clemson pre and post injury.
For North Carolina, the loss was their third in a row. It also put thier Tier 1 record below .500 at 4-5. The Tar Heels still have the 10th best overall RPI rank. The string of losses has cost Carolina a couple of seed lines in our bracket.
The selection of teams for the tourney is a whole body of work for the entire season. One game does not make or break a team's position. However, one game can be a very important piece of the resume. Tuesday's game was such a game. Clemson is currently a two seed and North Carolina a four seed.
